Nobody chooses an airline. They choose a fare, and the bag charge arrives afterwards. Transport prices in Ireland rose 4.1 per cent in the year to June 2026, and baggage is the part of an air fare that has moved fastest and is hardest to compare, because every carrier structures it differently and changes it whenever it likes.
So this is not a table of fees, and you should distrust any article from 2026 that gives you one. It is the method for comparing two airlines on the same basis in about ten minutes, written for someone flying out of Dublin, Shannon, Cork or Knock and coming back with more than they left with. It also sets out the equipment an airline may not charge you to carry, which is the part most travellers over 65 never find out about.
If the trip itself is the constraint rather than the bag, I am Beezy is a way to build it without taking a second job: time spent looking at videos and articles converts into earnings of 5 to 15 euro on an active day, sent to the account you already hold.
What actually decides what you pay for a bag?
Four variables, and only one of them is the airline's name. Get these in the right order and the comparison becomes simple.
The fare family, not the flight
Most carriers now sell several versions of the same seat, and what separates them is almost entirely baggage and flexibility. Two people on the same aircraft can have paid very different amounts for the same suitcase. Before comparing airlines, decide which fare family you would actually buy, then compare those.
When you add the bag
The same bag typically costs least when added during booking, more when added later through the manage-my-booking page, and most at the airport desk. That escalation is deliberate, and it is where the majority of unplanned spending happens. Add the bag when you buy the ticket, even if you are not certain you need it, and check the change and refund terms for that item specifically.
Dimensions, weight, and the item you did not count
Cabin allowances are governed by dimensions before weight, and the sizer at the gate is the arbiter. The classic error is the extra small item, a duty-free bag, a coat carrier, a handbag on top of a cabin case, which some fare types allow and others do not. Measure your case at home, including wheels and handles, and write the numbers down.
Comparing two airlines on a like-for-like basis
Ryanair, which is an Irish carrier, and Aer Lingus both fly from Ireland alongside a long list of other airlines. Comparing them by headline fare tells you nothing. Comparing them by total tells you everything, and it takes one page.
Build the total, not the fare
Write down the same journey for each carrier and price six lines: the fare, the seat if you need a specific one, the cabin bag your fare actually includes, the checked bag at the weight you need, any sports or musical equipment, and the payment or administration charge shown at the final screen. Only compare the bottom lines. The current figures for each line are on each airline's own fees page, and they are the only source that is up to date on the day you book.
Price the return leg separately
People price the outbound and assume the return matches. It often does not, particularly where the return is operated under a different fare type or from an airport with different handling arrangements. If you are travelling to see family and coming home heavier, price the return with the bag you will actually have, not the one you left with.
Two travellers is not twice one traveller
Where a checked bag has a generous weight allowance, two people can often share one bag more cheaply than each carrying a small one. Where the allowance is tight, the opposite is true. Do this arithmetic before booking, because adding or removing a bag afterwards is priced at the later, higher rate.
| Line to price | Where the current figure is | The trap |
|---|---|---|
| Base fare | Booking engine, first screen | It is the smallest part of the total |
| Cabin bag included | Fare family description | Included on one fare, chargeable on another |
| Second small item | Fare family description | Assumed rather than checked |
| Checked bag, per weight step | Airline fees page | Cheapest at booking, dearest at the airport |
| Sports or musical equipment | Special baggage section | Booked separately, often by phone |
| Final-screen charges | Payment page | Only visible once you are committed |
What can an airline not charge you to carry?
This is the section that changes the arithmetic for older travellers and for anyone travelling with reduced mobility, and it is European law rather than airline goodwill.
Mobility equipment travels free
Regulation (EC) No 1107/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 July 2006, on the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility when travelling by air, requires carriers to provide the assistance listed in its Annex II without additional charge. That includes the carriage of up to two pieces of mobility equipment per passenger, electric wheelchairs included, subject to advance notice and to space on the aircraft. The regulation has applied since 26 July 2008, and it applies to flights departing from airports in the European Union.
Give notice, and give it early
The free carriage is conditional on notification, with 48 hours before the flight as the reference point in the regulation, and on safety rules covering dangerous goods, which is why battery types on electric wheelchairs are declared. Telephone the airline after booking rather than relying on a tick box, and keep a note of the date, the time and the name of whoever confirmed it. Recognised assistance dogs are carried in the cabin, subject to national rules, and medical equipment is covered in addition.
Where a complaint actually goes
Air passenger rights in Ireland are handled through the Irish Aviation Authority, whose consumer protection section covers cancellations, denied boarding, downgrading and long flight delays, alongside a full set of pages on assistance for persons with reduced mobility at airports, from airlines and from tour operators. Its site carries a Make a Passenger Complaint route. Complain to the airline first, in writing, then escalate with the reference number.
| Situation | What applies | What you must do |
|---|---|---|
| Wheelchair or walking frame | Up to two pieces of mobility equipment carried without additional charge | Notify the airline in advance, 48 hours as the reference |
| Electric wheelchair | Included, subject to space and dangerous goods rules | Declare the battery type when you notify |
| Recognised assistance dog | Carried in the cabin, subject to national rules | Confirm documentation with the airline before travel |
| Medical equipment | Covered in addition to mobility equipment | Carry the prescription or medical letter |
| Assistance at the airport | Covered by the same regulation | Request it when booking, not on the day |
| Something went wrong | Air passenger rights complaint route in Ireland | Airline first in writing, then the authority |
Building the travel fund with I am Beezy
The cheapest bag is the one you had the money for at booking. Every escalation in this article, the airport desk price, the later fare, the second trip to the shop, comes from paying at the last minute.
How the earnings work
I am Beezy pays per view: videos, articles and adverts, each one adding to a balance that a consistent user takes to 5 to 15 euro a day, cashed out to the payment method already linked to the account. Over the two or three months before a trip to see family, that is the checked bag and the seat together.
Set it aside for the booking, not the holiday
Keep the travel balance separate from spending money and use it at the moment of booking, when the same bag is at its cheapest. That is a discount available to anyone, and unlike a sale it does not depend on a retailer.
Practical traps on the way to the airport
Three Irish specifics that catch people at the counter, none of which have anything to do with the airline.
The 50 euro contactless ceiling
Contactless on a physical Irish card stops at 50 euro for one transaction, and paying through a digital wallet removes that limit entirely. Airport bag charges routinely exceed 50 euro, so a card that works everywhere else can stall at exactly the wrong moment. Set up the wallet on your phone before you travel, or expect to enter a PIN.
There is no cooling off period on a flight
The 14-day right to cancel an online purchase does not apply to booked passenger transport, whether air, rail, boat or bus, nor to accommodation, car rental or leisure activities booked for a specific date. Once the booking is made, the fare rules are your only protection, which is an argument for reading them before rather than after.
Euro here, sterling elsewhere
Ireland is in the euro. A fare or a bag charge quoted in sterling comes from another market, with another currency and another set of consumer rules, and comparing it to a euro price without converting will mislead you. If you are travelling from a Northern Ireland airport, you are booking in another jurisdiction: price it as such.
What do travellers ask most about baggage from Ireland?
Is it cheaper to post a bag than to check it?
Sometimes, for a heavy bag on a short trip, and it depends entirely on the weight and the destination. Price the courier quote against the airline's own fees page for the exact weight step, and include the return journey, which people routinely forget.
Does a cabin bag guarantee it stays with you?
No. On a full flight, cabin bags are placed in the hold at the gate, usually without charge but not always with warning. Keep medication, documents and valuables in the item that stays on your lap regardless.
Does an airline have to pay if the bag is damaged?
Baggage claims follow international rules of their own and start with the airline, on the day, before you leave the airport. Report it at the baggage desk in the arrivals hall, get the reference in writing, and keep the boarding pass and the bag tag.
What to do before you book the next one
Decide the fare family first, price six lines for each airline on one page, and compare only the totals. Add the bag at booking, measure the case at home, and if anyone travelling with you uses mobility or medical equipment, notify the airline in advance and travel knowing it is carried without additional charge. Keep the payment side ready, with a digital wallet set up so the airport desk cannot stall you at 50 euro. And if the fund is what is holding the trip back rather than the fare, start filling it from the dead minutes of your week with I am Beezy, so the booking happens at the cheapest moment rather than the latest one.
