Coming home is not a holiday, but the island will price it as one unless you take a few decisions before you land. The gap between what a visitor pays and what a resident pays in Jamaica is not mainly about haggling — it comes from three specific mechanisms: which currency you settle in, where you change money, and whether you use transport whose fare is administered or transport whose fare is quoted. Get those three right and a fortnight with family costs a fraction of a packaged fortnight. The two-currency problem, and why it costs you
Jamaica runs on the Jamaican dollar, but the United States dollar genuinely circulates alongside it, and the visitor economy is where that overlap is thickest. This is not folklore; the central bank publishes its entire payment statistics in two currencies because both are in real use.
How much is actually settled in foreign currency
During 2025 there were 3.10 million card payments at point of sale settled in United States dollars, worth 577.11 million United States dollars, against 91.03 million settled in Jamaican dollars — so about 3.3 per cent of card payments at the till are settled in United States dollars rather than the national currency. Why settling in the foreign currency usually costs more
When a till offers to charge you in the currency of your card, somebody has chosen a conversion rate and it is not you. The published market rate is a matter of record — the Bank of Jamaica quoted 157.9084 Jamaican dollars to buy and 159.4795 to sell one United States dollar on 5 August 2026 — while a merchant's own rate is not published anywhere. Paying in Jamaican dollars and converting deliberately, once, puts you back in control of that spread.
The trap for the returning family member
Arriving with United States dollars in cash feels prudent and often is. Spending them note by note at tills is where the loss happens, because each transaction is a separate, unpublished conversion. Change once, deliberately, and carry the national currency.
Where do you change money, and who publishes the rates?
Here is the part most guides never mention, and it is genuinely useful: the central bank publishes what individual dealers actually paid and charged.
The official comparison nobody uses
Currency exchange over the counter runs through cambios, which are licensed and supervised by the Bank of Jamaica. The same central bank publishes counter rates and, separately, a foreign exchange page listing rates and volumes by dealer, with selectors for the date, the dealer and the currency. That makes Jamaica one of the few countries where the central bank itself effectively publishes the comparison table for changing money. Check it before you travel and again on the morning you plan to change, because the figures move.
Choosing between a cambio, a bank and a machine
Three routes, three profiles. A cambio is built for exactly this transaction and its rate is the one appearing on the central bank's dealer pages. A bank counter is slower but suits larger amounts and gives you a paper trail. A machine withdrawal in the national currency avoids carrying cash through an airport at all, at the cost of whatever your home institution applies. Which is best depends on the size of the sum and on how far you are travelling from an urban centre once you land.

Getting around at the fare islanders pay
Transport is where the visitor premium is largest and easiest to avoid, because a substantial part of Jamaican transport runs on administered fares rather than quoted ones.
The route taxi is the actual public transport
There is no metro on this island, and the everyday mass transport is the route taxi and the hackney carriage rather than a municipal bus network. That distinction matters enough that it shows up in the national price index: route taxi and hackney carriage fares rose 8.0 per cent on 2 June 2026, and that single change was enough to lift the entire consumer price index by 0.8 per cent for the month.
The fare is calculated, not negotiated
The Transport Authority publishes a routes and fares table covering origin and destination pairs across all fourteen parishes, and sets out the method: a base rate plus a rate for each additional kilometre, applied separately to route taxis, rural stage carriages and hackney carriages. One caution: the most recent effective date shown on that page is older than the June 2026 adjustment, so ask an operator or the Authority for the current rate card rather than quoting a table at a driver.
Which airport you land at decides half the journey
There are two international airports — Norman Manley in Kingston and Sangster in Montego Bay — and they serve opposite ends of the island. Landing at the wrong one for your family's parish converts a short trip into a long and expensive one, so choose on ground distance rather than on the ticket price alone. One correction while you are booking: the old national carrier no longer exists, having been taken over in 2011 and stopped operating under its own name in 2015, with Caribbean Airlines the principal regional carrier since. Any guide still naming the old airline in the present tense is more than a decade out of date, and its advice on everything else will be too.
Where the visitor premium creeps back in
A vehicle waiting outside an airport arrivals hall, a hotel forecourt or a cruise berth is not selling you a route fare; it is selling a charter, and a charter is quoted. Both are legitimate. The mistake is paying charter money by accident when a route service covers the same journey. Agree what you are buying before the doors close, and if you are going somewhere a route does not reach, agree the whole sum in Jamaican dollars in advance.
Paying for the trip home with I am Beezy

The daily range, in euros, and how to read it
Set the target as an amount, not as a number of months. The reference range is 5 to 15 euros a day, quoted that way because no Jamaican-dollar equivalent for it has been published — so convert it yourself, at the rate showing on the day you price the flights. If you are living in one of the four corridors above, you are probably earning in dollars or in sterling already, in which case convert straight from your own currency and skip the local leg altogether.
Which parishes are still rebuilding, and should you go?
Yes, with your eyes open and your expectations calibrated. Pretending the storm did not happen helps nobody, and neither does staying away.
What the measured picture shows
Stopover arrivals fell to 425,107 in the fourth quarter of 2025, down 40.9 per cent year on year, and visitor spending fell 31.9 per cent to 771.1 million United States dollars. Air arrivals were still 36.0 per cent below the previous year in January 2026, and accommodation and food service activity was down 12.0 per cent in the fourth quarter. The month you travel moves the price of everything
December is the most commercial month of the Jamaican year, and it is measurable rather than anecdotal. Card payments at point of sale reached 8.65 million transactions worth 119.18 billion Jamaican dollars in December 2025, against roughly 7.2 million in the preceding months, and machine withdrawals reached 5.64 million transactions worth 110.22 billion Jamaican dollars. Travelling outside it is the single largest saving available to somebody whose dates are flexible, and it is the one most diaspora families never consider because the visit is anchored to the holidays.
What that means for how you spend
Fewer visitors means capacity is available and small operators need custom. It also means some services in the western parishes are still being restored, so confirm directly rather than assuming. And note the tax tell while you plan: tourism services carry a General Consumption Tax rate of 10 per cent against a 15 per cent general rate, so a line taxed at ten on a bill is one that has been classified as a tourism service — useful information about what you are actually being sold.

Planning the trip
Decide your currency strategy before you fly, not at the arrivals hall: change a planned sum once, at a licensed cambio you have checked against the central bank's dealer pages, and carry the national currency. Learn the route that covers the journey you make most often, and agree in advance whether a vehicle is selling you a route fare or a charter. Expect the western parishes to be visibly mid-repair, go anyway, and spend with the smaller operators who need it.
