Diaspora Referrals in The Gambia: How to Recommend Without Straining Family Ties

A referral you send from abroad only works if the person at home can actually be paid. Here is how to check the Gambian end of the chain before you put your name on it.

The Gambia received 872.14 million US dollars in remittances during 2025, up 12.44 percent on the previous year according to the Central Bank of The Gambia — more than double the 407.70 million dollars the country earned from exporting goods. If you are one of the people sending that money, you already know what comes next. Sooner or later a cousin, a younger brother or a former classmate asks the other question: not "can you send me something" but "how do you get paid over there, can you sign me up too?"

That second question is the harder one, because answering it badly costs something money cannot repair. A transfer that goes wrong is a transfer; a recommendation that goes wrong is your judgement, and the family remembers. In 2026 the deciding factor is almost never the platform itself. It is whether the person you referred can be paid at the Gambian end, on a channel the Central Bank actually licenses.

Earning platforms are part of this picture: with I am Beezy, viewing content on a phone generates earnings that land on the payment method the user already has, which is exactly why the question of what that method is comes first and not last.

Why does a referral from abroad break down at the Gambian end?

Almost every failed referral you will ever make follows the same sequence. You sign up abroad, you are paid without friction, you assume the same is true at home, and you send the link. Three weeks later the person has an account, has done the work, and cannot get the money out. From where they are standing, you sold them something that does not work.

The payout channel is narrower than the app store suggests

The Central Bank of The Gambia licenses exactly two mobile money operators — Afrimobile Money, trading as Afrimoney and attached to Africell, and QMoney Financial Services Ltd, attached to QCell — plus a list of fintech payment service providers that includes Wave Transfer, Yonna Wallet, APS Wallet, Nafa Wallet and others. Note what that means for Wave: in The Gambia it is licensed as a payment service provider, not as a mobile money operator, and the regulator draws that line itself. Anyone who transplants what Wave does in Senegal onto The Gambia is describing a country that does not exist.

PayPal, meanwhile, appears on none of the Central Bank's lists — not among the mobile money operators, not among the fintech providers, not among the bureaux de change. Telling a relative in Brikama to "just cash out on PayPal" is the single fastest way to turn a favour into a grievance.

Two people in three have no formal account at all

The Central Bank cites the World Bank's Findex figure of 33 percent of the Gambian population having access to formal financial services, against 19 percent recorded by FinScope in 2019. The direction is good and the level is still low. Before you assume your cousin has somewhere for money to land, ask. The answer is more often "I use my sister's number" than you would guess, and shared wallets are where referral money quietly disappears.

What actually exists in The Gambia to receive money

This is the part worth getting straight before you recommend anything, because it is the part your relative will judge you on. The channels below are the ones the regulator names. They are not equivalent, and the differences matter more than any signup bonus.

Mobile wallets, and who stands behind them

Afrimoney and QMoney are the two licensed operators, and the choice usually follows the SIM card rather than the other way round. Registered mobile money accounts stood at 4.3 million with 2.1 million of them active at 30 September 2025, an activation rate of 49 percent, on a population of 2.42 million people — proof, if any were needed, that these are accounts rather than people, and that a great many of them are dormant. An account existing is not the same as an account working.

Banks, and the avenue they all sit on

Eleven commercial banks are licensed, and nine of the eleven have their head office on a single road, Kairaba Avenue, between Fajara and Serekunda. For someone living in the Upper River Region that geography is the whole story: a bank account is a two-hour journey away, a wallet is in their pocket.

Bureaux de change and the cash question

The Central Bank publishes a list of more than a hundred approved bureaux de change, each with its manager and address, concentrated in Banjul, Serekunda, Bakau and Kololi. That list is a verification tool, not a price list — no tariff is published, and you should not quote one.

The four checks to run before you send the link

None of these takes more than one phone call, and together they remove almost every reason a family referral turns sour. Run them in order.

Check one: does the person hold an accepted identity document?

No ID, no wallet in their own name, no payout. If they do not have one, the referral is premature — help with the identity document first and the earning account second. Reversing that order is the most common mistake in the whole sequence.

Check two: is the receiving channel on a Central Bank list?

The Central Bank publishes its mobile money operators, its fintech payment service providers, its licensed banks and its approved bureaux de change. If the channel you are about to recommend is on none of them, stop. This check costs five minutes and it is the one that protects your name.

Check three: whose account is it, really?

Agree explicitly that the account belongs to the person doing the work, on their own SIM, with their own ID. A wallet borrowed from an older sibling means the earnings arrive somewhere else, and the argument that follows will be blamed on the platform rather than on the arrangement.

Check four: what have you actually promised?

Say what the mechanism is and say nothing about outcomes. "You view content and each view earns something" is a description. "You will make enough to cover the rent" is a promise you cannot keep, and it is the sentence people quote back at you.

Referral schemes are not charity in either direction, and pretending otherwise is what makes them awkward. State the arrangement plainly and the relationship survives it.

How the mechanism works

With I am Beezy, you view content — videos, articles, advertisements — and each view generates earnings paid out to the payment method you already use. The reference range across the platform is 5 to 15 euros a day, which converts to roughly 425 to 1,280 dalasis at the Central Bank's valuation rate of 85.26 dalasis to the euro on 6 August 2026. The dalasi floats, so check the current rate before quoting a figure to anyone: the Central Bank recorded a 4.3 percent depreciation against the euro over a single quarter in 2025.

What to say, and what to leave out

Give the range, give the currency conversion with its date, and give the caveat that the rate moves. Do not round the figure up for effect, do not describe a good week as typical, and do not attach the word "guaranteed" to anything. A relative who starts with accurate expectations rarely comes back angry; a relative who started with your enthusiasm always does.

Never take their share

If a scheme pays you for the referral, say so before they sign up rather than after they find out. And never collect on their behalf. The moment their earnings pass through your account, every delay in the chain becomes your fault.

What does the person you referred owe the tax authority?

This is the question nobody asks until a letter arrives, and it is genuinely simple in The Gambia — as long as you use the right of the two income tax schedules the Gambia Revenue Authority publishes.

The self-employed threshold, not the employee one

Someone earning on a platform is not an employee, so the PAYE schedule does not apply to them. The self-employed schedule starts at zero tax on the first 24,000 dalasis of annual income, which is 2,000 dalasis a month. For perspective, the Gambia Bureau of Statistics puts the median monthly employment income of self-employed workers at 1,750 dalasis — below that threshold.

The small-turnover rule that replaces everything else

Where annual turnover is under 500,000 dalasis, the Gambia Revenue Authority applies 3 percent of turnover as a final tax — no annual return, only a quarterly declaration and payment by the fifteenth of the month following the end of the quarter. Telling your relative this before they start is worth more than any signup bonus.

SituationWhich schedule appliesTax-free bandWhat has to be filed

Small activity under 500,000 dalasis of turnover3 percent of turnover, treated as finalNot applicable — the rate replaces the scheduleQuarterly only, no annual return

Questions Gambian families abroad keep asking

These come up in almost every conversation, and short answers serve better than long ones.

Should I open the account for them from abroad?

No. The account, the SIM and the identity document should belong to the person who will do the work and receive the money. Anything else creates a dependency that ends badly and, at worst, locks the earnings behind your travel plans.

When is the worst moment to make a recommendation?

The fourth quarter. The Central Bank observes a seasonal surge in remittance inflows in the last quarter, which it attributes to festive-season effects — the same weeks when family expectations are highest and judgement is at its weakest. A recommendation made under that pressure is a recommendation made to end a conversation.

Do the same platforms work everywhere in the country?

The constraint is rarely the platform and almost always the payment channel and the network. Nearly half the population — 47.5 percent — lives in the Brikama Local Government Area and 15.7 percent in Kanifing, so most of your relatives are in the coastal conurbation. For anyone in Basse or Kuntaur, confirm the wallet before anything else.

Recommend the channel first, the platform second

The order is the entire lesson. Check that the person can be paid, check that the channel is licensed by the Central Bank, check that the account is genuinely theirs, and only then talk about what they might earn — with the range, the conversion and the date attached. Do that and a referral becomes what it should be: information you passed on, not a promise you made.
