It is the photographs from a decade, the thesis, the client files, the scans of documents you would now have to request again one office at a time. Almost everybody intends to back up. What most people actually have is a folder that synchronises to the cloud, which protects against one failure mode and quietly fails at several others. Which budget level buys what?
The gap between spending nothing and spending a little is much larger than the gap between spending a little and spending a lot. Here is what each level actually gets you.
Nothing at all, done properly
The free storage that comes with an account you already hold, whether through Google, Apple or Microsoft, covers documents and photographs for many people. Add an external drive you probably already own, run the operating system's own backup tool to it, and store it away from the computer. Turn on version history and find out how far back it goes. Learn where deleted files rest before permanent removal and for how long. Turn on two-factor authentication and, critically, write the recovery codes on paper and store them somewhere physical, because a lost second factor locks you out of your own archive as thoroughly as any disk failure. Check whether the service holds an independent copy of a compromised account and for how long.
