Solar in Uganda is not a fringe choice. At the May 2024 census, 53.4 per cent of households had access to electricity, and the split inside that figure is the surprise: 28.1 per cent were supplied by solar against 25.3 per cent by the grid. More electrified Ugandan households run on panels than on a meter. That does not, on its own, mean a kit will pay for itself at your address.
Whether it does depends on one number almost nobody checks before signing: the tariff block your consumption actually sits in. Uganda's domestic electricity price is not a single rate, and the gap between its bands is wide enough to decide the answer by itself. What follows is the calculation, in the order a small business owner or a household should run it, using published figures for the inputs that are published and honest gaps where they are not. If the deposit is the obstacle rather than the arithmetic, an application such as I am Beezy, which pays for time spent viewing content, is one of the ways people assemble it.
Start from the bill you already pay, not the one you imagine
Four blocks, and a price that triples between them
The Electricity Regulatory Authority approves retail tariffs quarter by quarter, and the distributor, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited, publishes the resulting schedule. For the third quarter of 2026, covering July to September, the domestic category is banded rather than flat. The first fifteen units in a month are charged at 250.0 shillings, the units from sixteen to eighty at 779.4, the units from eighty-one to one hundred and fifty at 412.0, and everything above one hundred and fifty at 779.4 again.
Two households on the same street can therefore pay three times more per unit than each other for identical appliances, purely because of where their monthly consumption lands. Any payback calculation that starts from an average national price rather than from your own band is answering a different question.
Who actually qualifies for the lowest rate
The lifeline rate is not automatic. The published notice states that it applies to domestic consumers whose rolling average monthly consumption over the previous six months does not exceed one hundred units. A single heavy month can therefore move you off it for half a year. The same notice records that fixed monthly charges, inspection fees, new connection charges and reconnection fees are unchanged, which matters because those sit outside the per-unit price entirely and do not disappear when you add panels.
What is your household really spending on energy?
The bill is only part of the answer
Grid electricity is a minority of Ugandan household energy spending, and treating it as the whole of it produces a payback period that flatters solar in some homes and understates it badly in others. The Bureau of Statistics records average Kampala market prices for the fuels that do the daily work: charcoal at 1,610 shillings a kilogramme and paraffin at 4,398 shillings a kilogramme in March 2026. Charcoal has climbed steadily, from 1,176 shillings a kilogramme in the first quarter of 2023 to 1,622 in the first quarter of 2026.
Housing, water, electricity and gas together take 15.9 per cent of national household spending and 21.5 per cent in Kampala. If a solar kit will replace paraffin lighting or phone charging paid for at a kiosk, those costs belong in the calculation. If it will only shave a grid bill that is already inside the lifeline band, the case is much weaker.
Write down twelve months, not one
Pull twelve months of purchases, whether from prepaid tokens or postpaid bills, and write the units next to the shillings. You are looking for two things: your median monthly units, which tells you your block, and the spread between your quietest and busiest month, which tells you how much of the year a system sized to the median will fail to cover.
| Domestic band, third quarter 2026 | Rate per unit | What it means for a solar case |
|---|---|---|
| First 15 units in a month | 250.0 shillings | The cheapest energy you can buy; displacing it saves the least |
| Units 16 to 80 | 779.4 shillings | The band where displacement is worth the most per unit |
| Units 81 to 150 | 412.0 shillings | The cooking band; cheaper than the one below it |
| Above 150 units | 779.4 shillings | Heavy users are back at the top rate |
| Commercial, low voltage | 562.1 shillings average | A shop pays on a different schedule entirely |

The calculation, in five steps
Step one, list the load you actually want to move
Write out the appliances, their wattage, and the hours they run. Lighting, phone charging, a television and a fridge produce very different answers. A fridge runs all night and sets the battery size; lighting does not. Installers size systems from this list, so producing it yourself is what makes three quotes comparable.
Step two, price that same energy at your band
Convert the load to units per month, then price it at the band it falls in, using the table above. This is the annual saving, and it is the only number on the installer's side of the ledger that you can verify from a published source.
Step three, get three quotes against one written specification
Hand each supplier the same appliance list and ask for panel wattage, battery chemistry and capacity, inverter rating, and the warranty term on each component separately. Prices for domestic solar kits are not published by any Ugandan authority, so the market price is whatever three comparable quotes tell you it is. Refuse to compare a quote that names no components.
Step three and a half, ask where the parts come from
Uganda has no coastline, and every panel, battery and inverter on the market arrived by road or rail from a foreign port. The East African Community supplies 45.2 per cent of merchandise imports, led by Kenya and Tanzania, with Asia at 35.6 per cent and the European Union at 9.3 per cent. That geography has a practical consequence for a solar buyer: a replacement inverter is not a next-day item, and the supplier who can actually produce one is worth more than a slightly lower quote from a supplier who cannot. Ask what stock is held locally and what has to be ordered.
Step four, divide, then add what fails early
Divide the installed cost by the annual saving for a first payback figure, then correct it. Batteries are the part that ages fastest, so add a replacement at the end of the warranted battery life. A payback calculation that assumes nothing is ever replaced is a sales document, not a forecast.
Step five, test it against the cost of money
If the kit is financed, the comparison is not against zero. Commercial bank lending rates on shilling loans averaged 18.00 per cent in May 2026, with the central bank rate at 9.75 per cent in June 2026. A system that pays back in four years on cash may not do so on credit, and that is a judgement you should make before the deposit rather than after.
| Worksheet line | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|
| Monthly units to displace | Your own appliance list and running hours |
| Price per unit | The published quarterly band that matches your consumption |
| Other fuel displaced | Your actual charcoal, paraffin and charging spending |
| Installed cost | Three written quotes against one specification |
| Battery replacement | Warranted battery life stated in the quote |
| Cost of credit | The rate on the loan you are actually offered |
Funding the deposit on a solar kit with I am Beezy
What the application pays for
I am Beezy works on viewing time. Videos, articles and advertising watched on a phone accrue a balance, and that balance leaves through the local payment method the user already relies on. It is not a substitute for income, but a deposit is a fixed, one-off obstacle, and small daily amounts accumulate against a fixed obstacle in a way they never do against a recurring bill.
What the range looks like in shillings
Its reference figure is 5 to 15 euros a day. Using the mid-rate of 4,270.15 shillings to the euro reported for June 2026 by the Ministry of Finance on Bank of Uganda figures, that lands between roughly 21,000 and 64,000 shillings. The currency floats, so recheck the conversion before building it into a plan.
Does solar still make sense with no grid connection at all?
For nearly half of electrified households, that is the situation
With 28.1 per cent of households supplied by solar against 25.3 per cent by the grid, off-grid is not the exception in Uganda. Where there is no connection, the comparison changes completely: you are no longer displacing a tariff, you are displacing paraffin, candles, kiosk phone charging and, for some, a generator running on fuel whose price rose 29.0 per cent for petrol and 39.0 per cent for diesel in the twelve months to July 2026, against general inflation of 4.0 per cent.
Replace the most expensive habit first
Size the first system around lighting and phone charging rather than around everything at once. Those two loads are small, they are the ones currently being paid for in cash every week, and they let you observe how the equipment behaves through a full rainy period before committing to a battery bank.
What to check before you sign anything
The quote must name its components
Panel wattage, battery type and capacity, inverter rating, and cable specification should all appear in writing. A quote expressed only as a package name gives you nothing to compare and nothing to claim against.
Warranty, and who honours it
Establish which entity honours the warranty, where it is physically located, and what happens if the installer stops trading. A warranty from a business you cannot reach from your district is a line of text.
If the load is a shop, you are on a different schedule
A business premises on a three-phase low voltage supply not exceeding one hundred amperes is billed under the commercial category, which for the third quarter of 2026 runs at 666.5 shillings a unit at peak, 562.1 at shoulder and 429.7 off peak. That structure changes the solar case in a way the domestic bands do not, because a shop's consumption is concentrated in daylight hours, exactly when panels produce. An entrepreneur whose load sits in trading hours has a stronger case than a household whose load sits after dark, since the household needs storage and the shop may not. Run the calculation on the hours you actually trade, not on a daily average.
Remember the tariff moves every quarter
The regulator resets retail tariffs quarterly, citing currency movement, oil prices and inflation among the drivers. Any payback figure you calculate is a snapshot against the current schedule, so recheck the published bands each quarter rather than assuming the saving is fixed for a decade.
Run the five steps in order and the answer stops being a matter of opinion. Your band, your load, your quotes, your battery life, your cost of credit. If the arithmetic works and only the deposit is missing, building it in small daily amounts with I am Beezy is a slower route than a loan, but it is one that does not add 18 per cent to the price of the roof.
