Online payment protection in Thailand: which method survives a bad order

An instant transfer, a card and a marketplace order do not leave you in the same position when a parcel never arrives. Here is what each one gives you in Thailand, and what to collect before you need it.

Everything about buying online in Thailand is built for speed. You scan, the money moves in seconds, the seller confirms, and the whole exchange is over before you have finished reading the product page. That speed is genuinely excellent — right up to the moment the parcel does not arrive, and you discover that speed and recourse are opposites.

Choosing how to pay is therefore not a question of convenience. It is a question of what position you will be in if something goes wrong, and that position is decided at the moment you pay, not afterwards. This guide sets out what each method actually gives you here, and what to have on file before you need any of it.

If a run of bad orders has eaten the buffer that lets you shop calmly, a platform like I am Beezy turns viewing time into a daily credit — around 190 to 570 baht a day at the central bank rate published on 5 August 2026 — and that rebuilds the margin without touching what you had already put aside.

Where does an online order in Thailand actually go wrong?

Almost never in a dramatic way. The failures that cost people money are ordinary, and they cluster into three shapes worth recognising before you pay.

The seller who was never a shop

A listing on a social feed, a chat conversation, a request to transfer to an account, and silence. This is the most common and the least recoverable, because the transaction happened entirely outside any structure that could arbitrate it. The signal to watch for is a seller who steers you away from a marketplace and towards a direct transfer, usually with a discount attached.

The order that arrives wrong

The item is not what was described, or is broken, or is a different size. Here the seller usually exists and is often willing to fix it, and the whole outcome turns on how quickly you documented the state of the parcel.

The delivery that never lands

Between the marketplaces and the delivery applications, most parcels move through a chain of several parties. The two verified regional marketplaces here are Shopee and Lazada; on the food and local-delivery side you will meet Grab, LINE MAN, foodpanda and Robinhood. When a delivery goes missing, the first useful question is which of those parties actually holds your money at that moment, because that is who can return it.

Instant transfer, card or marketplace: what does each one give you?

These three are not variations on a theme. They put you in structurally different positions, and the difference only becomes visible when there is a problem.

The instant transfer is fast and final

PromptPay is the national instant rail, operated under the authority of the Bank of Thailand, with every bank participating and the recipient identified by a mobile number or a national identity card number. The official Bank of Thailand schedule prices it free up to 5,000 baht, and the central bank notes that most banks removed the charge on digital channels from 2018. It is superb for paying people you already trust. What it does not include is a step where a third party holds the money while you check what you received — the transfer is complete the moment it leaves. Recovering it is a complaint to your bank and, if necessary, a matter for the police, not an operation the payment system performs on request.

The card puts an intermediary between you and the seller

Thailand had 26,528,958 credit cards in circulation at 31 May 2026, producing 101,100 thousand payment transactions in May against 25,168 thousand for the far more numerous debit cards. The reason experienced buyers reach for the credit card online is not the credit. It is that the card scheme sits between you and the merchant, and schemes run a formal dispute procedure. Do not assume you know its terms: ask your own issuer, in writing, what its procedure is and what deadline applies. Learn that before your first problem, not during it.

The marketplace holds the money for a while

Buying through a marketplace rather than direct means the platform, not the seller, holds your payment for a defined window and applies its own rules on returns and refunds. That window is the protection, and it is why the same item at the same price is not the same purchase inside and outside the platform. Read the platform's published policy, because it is the one that will decide your case.

Building your proof before you need it

Every dispute process, whatever the method, asks you the same questions. You can answer all of them in advance, and it takes about a minute per order.

The five things to keep

The listing as it appeared when you bought, captured as a screenshot rather than a link, because listings get edited. The full conversation with the seller. The payment confirmation showing amount, date and recipient. The tracking reference. And a continuous video of the parcel being opened, starting before the packaging is broken.

Why the unboxing video wins arguments

A photograph of a damaged item proves the item is damaged. It does not prove the item arrived that way. A single unbroken recording that starts on the sealed parcel, shows the label, and continues through to the contents removes the only defence the other side has. It is the cheapest insurance available to an online buyer and it costs nothing but the habit.

Where to keep it

In one folder per month, not scattered across a photo library. If you have to reconstruct an order from three months ago, the reconstruction is what makes people give up on claims that would have succeeded.

MethodWho holds the money after you payWhat you must do yourself
Instant transfer to a sellerThe seller, immediatelyVerify the seller before paying, not after
Card payment on a siteThe merchant, through the schemeAsk your issuer for its dispute procedure
Marketplace orderThe platform, for a set windowRaise the claim inside that window
Electronic money walletThe wallet operatorRead the operator's own complaint rules
Cash on deliveryNobody, until you hand it overInspect before paying where allowed

The pattern is visible at a glance. The methods that feel slowest are the ones that keep somebody standing between you and a seller you have never met.

Rebuilding your buying budget with I am Beezy

With I am Beezy you view content — videos, articles, advertisements — and each view generates earnings credited to your account and paid out through the platform's payment provider. The connection to this article is specific: a buyer with no margin buys badly. When a refund is stuck, the pressure to accept a bad settlement or to jump on an implausible bargain comes from having nothing else coming in.

What a small separate inflow changes

It lets you wait out a dispute instead of writing it off, and it lets you refuse the transfer-only seller who is offering a price that only exists because there is no protection attached. Both of those decisions are worth more than the amount involved.

Keeping it separate on purpose

Keep the earnings in a distinct place from your everyday balance so the buffer stays a buffer. The point is not the size of the amount. It is that it arrives on a rhythm that has nothing to do with whether your last order worked out.

What to do in the first days after a bad order

Speed matters, because every process here has a window and windows close quietly.

Step one, before you contact anyone

Assemble the five items above into one message. Doing this first stops you from sending an angry note that contains no evidence, which is the message most likely to be ignored.

Step two, contact in the right order

Start with whoever is holding the money. For a marketplace order that is the platform, not the seller. For a card payment it is your card issuer, in parallel with the merchant. For an instant transfer to a stranger it is your bank, and you should ask specifically what recall procedure exists rather than asking whether you can be refunded.

Step three, write everything down

Date, channel, name of the person, reference number, what was promised, what date it was promised for. A claim that is escalated succeeds on the record of the previous attempts, and that record only exists if you kept it as you went.

Day twoSend the evidence pack in one messageRemoves the back-and-forth
Day sevenAsk in writing for a decision dateCreates the record for escalation

The habits that keep disputes rare

The best dispute is the one that never opens, and prevention here is a short list of behaviours rather than a state of vigilance.

Never let a seller move you off the platform

A seller who offers a lower price for a direct transfer is asking you to pay for the discount with your protection. Sometimes that is a fair trade with someone you know. With a stranger it never is, and the request itself is the warning.

Match the method to the amount and the counterparty

Small amount, seller you know, use the instant transfer and enjoy how cheap and fast it is. Larger amount, seller you do not know, use a method with an intermediary and accept the friction as the price of the protection. The mistake is using one method for everything.

Understand the scale you are operating in

Thailand processed 4,344,542 thousand payment transactions in May 2026, of which 99.9 % were electronic, according to the Bank of Thailand. Electronic money alone accounted for 481,665 thousand of those. This is a country where digital payment is routine and mature, and where the systems work as designed. Protection is not something they lack; it is something you have to choose at the moment you pay.

Decide the method before you decide the purchase, keep the five pieces of evidence for every order, and reserve the instant transfer for people you would lend money to. That combination removes most of the risk of buying online here without slowing anything down. And to rebuild the buffer that lets you shop without pressure, open a free account on I am Beezy and let the content you already watch pay into it.
