Sport in Indonesia is not sold as a membership. It is sold as an hour. You book a court — futsal, badminton, basketball, five-a-side — for a fixed slot, you pay for the slot whether eight people come or four, and the price of the same court changes depending on the time of day you take it. Once you see it that way, the question stops being "how do I find something cheap" and becomes "how do I stop paying for empty places".
That single shift is worth more than any discount hunt. A slot divided by ten costs each player less than half of the same slot divided by four, and nothing about the venue, the sport or the city changed. The rest of the budget is equipment, where the useful thing to know is a tax rule that most people get wrong in both directions.

Build a fixed group before you book anything

Book recurring rather than one-off
Venues value a slot that is filled every week without them having to sell it again. The same conversation is where you learn whether an off-peak standing slot is treated differently from a peak one.
Use free and public space for what does not need a court
Running, calisthenics, and most conditioning work need no booking at all. Splitting your week into one paid session on a court and one unpaid session outdoors halves the court budget without halving the training. Public and campus facilities differ from city to city, so this is a question to ask locally rather than a rule to copy.
Watch the calendar
The Indonesian school calendar is provincial, and it moves demand. In Jawa Timur the 2026/2027 year began on Monday 13 July 2026 and runs to 18 or 19 June 2027, with a mid-semester break from 1 to 3 October 2026 and an eighteen-day holiday at the end of the second semester. Around holidays and around 17 August, the national day, venues fill differently — booking earlier during those weeks and later outside them is a small habit that keeps the price predictable.

How much of what you pay for equipment is actually tax?
The 11 % that people call 12 %
This is the most misunderstood figure in the country and it is worth getting right before you buy anything. The nominal Indonesian VAT rate is 12 %, but it applies to a reduced base equal to eleven twelfths of the value, so the effective rate on ordinary goods and services is 11 %. The tax administration illustrates it with its own example: a phone at Rp10.000.000 has a taxable base of Rp9.166.666 and VAT of Rp1.099.999.
The full 12 % is reserved for luxury goods subject to the additional luxury levy — certain motor vehicles, luxury housing, aircraft, yachts — and has applied to them since 1 February 2025. Sports equipment is not in that category. If a seller quotes you a 12 % line on a racket or a pair of boots, the arithmetic is wrong, and now you can say why.
Buying used, and what to check before you do
The second-hand route runs through the general marketplaces rather than through dedicated apps: Shopee, Tokopedia, Lazada and Blibli are the four platforms the tax administration named individually in July 2026 as withholding agents for online sellers, which is the clearest public attestation of their weight that exists here. What to check is unglamorous: the item's real age, whether the sizing matches your own rather than the seller's description, and where the seller ships from, since a return across islands costs a second journey. For footwear and rackets, ask for photographs of the parts that wear first — soles, grips, strings — rather than the flattering angle in the listing.
The seller's tax obligations are not yours
Since 1 July 2026 those four marketplaces withhold 0,5 % of the gross turnover of their Indonesian sellers and remit it to the Treasury under PMK 37/2025. Some sellers mention it in their listings, occasionally as a reason for a higher price. The tax administration is explicit that this is not a new tax, only a change in how an existing one is collected, and it is levied on the seller's turnover, not added to your basket.
So treat it as background information rather than a negotiating point. What it does tell you is that a seller who talks about it openly is operating as a declared business, which is generally a better counterparty for a second-hand purchase than an anonymous account with no history. If you ever sell your own old gear, that is the moment the rule becomes yours — and the relevant line then is the Rp500.000.000 annual turnover threshold below which an individual is not taxed on that turnover.

Add the travel for every player, every week, and the answer frequently reverses. The comparison that matters is the total cost per player per session including getting there, not the headline rate on the booking page.
Is it worth flying for a tournament?
