Almost every referral programme is sold on a single number, and it is the least useful one on the page. A scheme paying five per cent that validates a sale in thirty days puts cash in your account long before a scheme paying twenty per cent that validates in ninety. The rate says nothing about whether you see the money, or when.

The questions that decide whether this works for you in Jamaica are different again, and nobody answers them in the sign-up flow. Do you need to register a business before anyone can pay you? What identifier will the payer ask for, given that there is no IBAN here? And at what point does Tax Administration Jamaica want to hear about it?

While your first commissions sit in a validation window and nothing has cleared, an app such as I am Beezy pays you for content you view, which is the kind of small daily amount that covers a top-up and a route taxi rather than a wage.

What actually creates a commission, and when does it become yours?

A referral commission is not paid for effort, reach or good intentions. It is paid for a completed transaction that a merchant keeps and can trace back to you. Everything between those two points is where a first quarter quietly disappears.

The three events that have to line up

Someone has to see your link, click it, and then buy something the merchant does not refund. Break any one of the three and the chain pays nothing. That is why a post with heavy engagement can produce no income whatsoever: engagement happens at step one, money is created at step three. It also explains why a small, specific audience regularly out-earns a large general one. A recommendation that arrives inside a group of people who already trust you is qualified before the click happens.

Why the first month rarely pays anything

Most programmes hold a commission for a validation window, because the merchant needs its own returns period to close first. Then a minimum balance has to be reached, and payouts leave on a fixed date rather than on request. Stack those delays and a sale made in your first fortnight is a normal candidate for payment in your third month. Read the validation window and the payout threshold before you read the rate: both change from one programme to the next, and together they decide your cash position for ninety days.

Do you need a registered business to earn a commission in Jamaica?

This is where most people stall. The obligation attaches to income, not to the act of earning, and the thresholds are higher than almost anyone expects.

Sole trader is the default, and it costs nothing to be one

Earning a side income as an individual does not require you to form a company. You are, in the ordinary case, a self-employed individual, and the paperwork that matters is a tax filing rather than a company registration. A company brings filing obligations and accounting costs that a first-year referral income will not cover. Revisit the question when a merchant asks for a business contract, not before.

The TRN is the identifier that everything hangs on

Your Taxpayer Registration Number, the TRN issued by Tax Administration Jamaica, is the personal identifier required to open a bank account, to be employed and to file in Jamaica. It is not a VAT number, it is not a company number, and it does not signal that you run a business. If you do not have one yet, that is the first task on the list, ahead of choosing a programme.

Getting the money onto the island without losing a slice of it

A commission on a dashboard is not income. It becomes income when it lands somewhere you can spend it, and Jamaica has its own rails with its own vocabulary.

Bank transfer, and the reason nobody will ask you for an IBAN

There is no IBAN in Jamaica and no SEPA transfer. Domestic payments run over the ACH for everyday transfers and over JamClear-RTGS for large interbank amounts. What a payer needs is your name, your bank and your account number. If a platform insists on an IBAN, it has not been set up for this market. The Bank of Jamaica licenses eight commercial banks, and a Jamaican account can be denominated in United States dollars as well as in JMD, which removes a conversion step if your programme pays in that currency. Citibank N.A. is on that list but operates as a branch rather than a retail bank, so the practical choice is between NCB, Scotiabank, Sagicor Bank, JN Bank, JMMB Bank, First Global Bank and CIBC Caribbean.

Wallets and prepaid cards, and what a sandbox means for you

The Bank of Jamaica publishes a list of authorised payment service providers that includes Lynk, JN Pay Wallet, MyCash Mobile Wallet, GK One and LASCO Gold. None of them is a mobile money service run by a telecoms operator, so nothing you have read about paying into a phone account in another market applies here. All of them operate under a regulatory sandbox rather than a full licensing regime, because the Bank of Jamaica has said it is amending the Payment, Clearing and Settlement Act to create one. That is a reason to keep your main balance in a bank account, not a reason to avoid them.

Money transfer networks, and why the counter may have moved

If your programme pays from abroad, a remittance network is often the fastest route to cash. The Bank of Jamaica register names Western Union through GraceKennedy Remittance Services, MoneyGram, RIA through N.E.T.S Elite and Supreme Ventures Fintech, Remitly, Thunes, IDT and Shaka Express. The Bank of Jamaica counted nine primary agents in operation and 442 active service locations at the end of 2025, against 492 a year earlier. The physical network is contracting, so check that a collection point still exists near you.

Authorised wallet or prepaid cardWallet or card details, TRN at onboardingThat the provider is on the Bank of Jamaica list, and that it operates under the sandbox

No Jamaican regulator publishes the fees on any of these routes, so there is no table to look them up in. Ask each payer, in writing, what it deducts and at what exchange rate. That answer is the only comparison you will get.

What Tax Administration Jamaica actually wants from you

Articles tell you that you must declare. Very few tell you the threshold below which the rate is zero, and in Jamaica that threshold is high.

The threshold that decides whether you owe anything at all

For the 2026 year of assessment, Tax Administration Jamaica publishes an effective income tax threshold of 1,876,614 JMD of statutory income, and below it the income tax rate is zero. Two numbers circulate for 2026 and both are correct, which is the commonest source of confusion in a Jamaican tax article. The annualised threshold rate moves from 1,799,376 to 1,902,360 JMD on 1 April 2026; because the year of assessment is the calendar year, the effective threshold for 2026 is the weighted figure of 1,876,614 JMD. In monthly payroll terms the allowance is 149,948 JMD from January to March 2026 and 158,530 JMD from April to December, and the threshold is lifted every 1 April through 2028.

Two positive rates, and no forty per cent band

Above the threshold the scale has only two positive rates: 25 per cent up to 6,000,000 JMD of taxable annual income, and 30 per cent beyond. There is no band at 40 or 45 per cent. The question is not what you earned on one platform, but whether your total statutory income for the year, salary included, crosses the threshold.

GCT is not VAT, and you are nowhere near its threshold

Jamaica's consumption tax is the General Consumption Tax, not VAT, and its standard rate has been 15 per cent since 1 April 2020. Registration becomes compulsory at 15,000,000 JMD of taxable supplies over twelve months, a threshold raised in favour of smaller businesses with effect from 1 April 2025. A referral income is nowhere near that line, but it marks the point at which a side income becomes a business in the eyes of the administration.

Earning while the approval runs, with I am Beezy

The awkward part of a first quarter is not the eventual size of the income. It is that the work and the money are separated by two months, and rent is not.

What the mechanism is

With I am Beezy you view content, meaning videos, articles and adverts, and each view generates earnings paid to your usual payment method. Active users report the equivalent of roughly 900 to 2,700 JMD a day. That will not replace a salary and it is not offered as one. It sits alongside something slower, which is the exact shape of a referral income in its first ninety days.

What to do with the first money that clears

Two habits separate people who still have a referral income in year two from people who quietly stopped. Keep the side income in its own account, so you can read the annual gross figure at a glance. And write down, on the day a programme pays you, what it deducted and at what rate.

The objections that stop most people before they start

Three come up in every conversation about referral income in Jamaica, and each has a factual answer rather than a motivational one.

I already have a job, does this complicate my payslip?

Your salary already carries three deductions besides income tax: NIS at 3 per cent, capped on emoluments of 5,000,000 JMD a year, NHT at 2 per cent with no cap, and Education Tax at 2.25 per cent, which comes to 7.25 per cent before any income tax. A side income does not change those lines; it is assessed against your total statutory income for the year.

Nobody I know has money to spend right now

That objection deserves to be taken seriously in 2026 rather than argued away. Hurricane Melissa struck on 28 October 2025 as a category five storm, and the Planning Institute of Jamaica put the damage, loss and additional costs at 1,953 billion JMD, which is 56.7 per cent of 2024 GDP and more than four times Hurricane Gilbert. GDP contracted by 7.5 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2025. What follows is a change of subject rather than a reason to stop: recommendations that save a household money travel further right now than recommendations that ask it to spend.

The programme pays in United States dollars, is that a problem?

Less than you would think, because the United States dollar genuinely circulates here. The Bank of Jamaica publishes its payment statistics in both currencies, Jamaican cash machines dispense United States dollars, and there were 24,830 USD credit cards and 39,092 dual currency cards in issue in December 2025. Ask your bank about a USD-denominated account before you accept a conversion at whatever rate the platform applies.

Your first thirty days, in order

The sequence matters more than the choice of programme, because a wrong order wastes a month you cannot get back.

A list you can work through this week

Get your TRN if you do not have one. Nominate the account that will receive the money, and ask whether a USD-denominated account suits the programmes you are looking at. Read the validation window and the payout threshold of two programmes before joining either. Then write your first recommendation for a specific person with a specific problem, rather than a post for everybody.

Do that and the first ninety days stop being a mystery: you will know what you are owed, when it should arrive and whether you owe anything on it. Keep your records from day one, watch the 1,876,614 JMD threshold rather than the size of any single commission, and treat the waiting period as a budgeting problem.
