Referral partners in Thailand: keeping the relationship after the first introduction

Finding one referral is easy. Keeping the partner for the next ten is the part nobody explains. Here is how the follow-up works in Thailand, how commissions get settled, and what the Revenue Department expects once the money starts arriving.

Putting two people in touch costs you almost nothing. Someone you know needs what your contact sells, you put the two of them in the same room, and a commission follows. Then three months pass, the partner stops answering, and you are prospecting from zero again. That is the real weakness of referral income in Thailand, and it has nothing to do with finding the first deal.

This guide is about the second, the third and the tenth transaction with the same partner. It covers where the follow-up actually happens in this market, how to settle a commission without either side losing a day to bank friction, and what you owe the tax administration once referral money becomes regular.

While the partner list is still thin, an app such as I am Beezy pays a small amount for content you view — roughly 190 to 570 baht a day, converted at the central bank rate published on 5 August 2026 — which is what most people use to sit out a quiet month instead of accepting a bad deal.

Why does the second transaction decide your referral income?

A single introduction is a favour. A stream of introductions is a business, and the two are priced completely differently. Understanding which one you are actually running changes what you do with your week.

The introduction is a cost, not a product

Getting two parties to trust each other enough to transact costs you reputation, time and often a favour you cannot call in twice. If that expense produces exactly one commission, your cost per deal is the whole thing. If it produces eight over two years, the same expense is spread across all eight and your effective rate per hour changes completely. This is why partners who bring one big client and disappear rarely make money, while people who bring modest, repeated business often do.

What breaks between deal one and deal two

Three things, in this order. The partner never confirmed in writing what happens on the next deal, so the second one arrives with an argument attached. Nobody set a rhythm, so weeks pass and the relationship cools into a contact you feel awkward messaging. And the first commission was settled badly — late, in the wrong amount, or with an unexplained deduction — which quietly ends the relationship without anyone announcing it.

The question to answer before you introduce anyone

Ask yourself whether this contact will have the same need again within a year. If the answer is no, treat it as a one-off and price it as one. If the answer is yes, the introduction is the opening of an account, and everything below applies.

What does a Thai partner relationship actually run on?

Transplanting a follow-up routine from another market is where most of this goes wrong. The channels, the expectations and the payment rails are not the ones you would use in Europe or North America.

Messaging carries the relationship, email does not

The messaging application LINE is dominant in Thailand to a degree that has no European equivalent — it is embedded deeply enough that a major food delivery operator, LINE MAN, was built directly on top of it. In practice that means a partner relationship here lives in a chat thread, not an inbox. A follow-up email to a Thai business contact can sit unread for a week without anyone intending any offence. The same message in a chat gets an answer the same afternoon.

The follow-up rhythm that keeps a partner warm

Set a cadence and hold it, because the alternative is contacting people only when you want something, which is exactly what makes them stop replying. A workable pattern is a short message once a month with something useful in it — a price change, a supplier who has capacity, a competitor's move — and one longer conversation each quarter about what they need next. Neither of those asks for anything. That is the point.

Meeting in person still closes more than it should

Business relationships in Thailand carry a strong in-person component, and a partner you have eaten with behaves differently from one you have only messaged. If your partners are spread across provinces, the domestic flight network exists for exactly this reason: Thai Airways, AirAsia, Nok Air, Bangkok Airways and VietJet Air all serve internal routes, and the alternative between the north and the far south is an overnight bus.

Settling commissions without friction

A commission that arrives late or short is the fastest way to lose a partner, and it is also the easiest problem on this page to solve, because the domestic payment system in Thailand is unusually good at exactly this.

PromptPay is the default, and it is close to free

PromptPay is the national instant transfer rail, operated under the authority of the Bank of Thailand, and every bank participates. The Bank of Thailand publishes an official schedule: free up to 5,000 baht, under 2 baht from 5,001 to 30,000, under 5 baht from 30,001 to 100,000, and under 10 baht above that. The central bank also notes that most banks removed those charges on digital channels from 2018. For a commission settled between two Thai accounts, the cost of the transfer is effectively not a line item.

What you need instead of an international account number

Thailand has no international bank account identifier of the European kind, and no cross-border direct debit scheme either. A PromptPay recipient is identified by a mobile number or a national identity card number, and a bank account is identified by the bank plus the account number. If you are asking a partner for payment details, requesting an international account number signals immediately that you have copied a form from somewhere else.

Why the transfer happens on a phone

In May 2026 Thailand processed 2,381,863 thousand interbank retail transfers, of which 2,379,892 thousand went through internet or mobile channels against 143 thousand over a bank counter, according to the Bank of Thailand payment statistics. A partner who says they will go to a branch is not describing normal practice here. Settle in the app, screenshot the confirmation, send it in the chat thread.

None of those six lines needs a lawyer. A message in the chat thread that both sides have read is enough to prevent the argument that otherwise arrives with the second deal.

Covering the quiet months with I am Beezy

With I am Beezy you view content — videos, articles, advertisements — and each view generates an amount credited to your account, paid out through the platform's payment provider. It is not a replacement for referral income, and it does not scale like one. What it does is remove the pressure that makes people accept a partner they should have refused.

What it changes about how you negotiate

A referral business has a cash rhythm that does not match its work rhythm: the effort is front-loaded and the money arrives after the client has paid your partner. If you have nothing coming in during that window, you will take the first terms offered. A small daily amount arriving independently is worth more than its size suggests, because it buys you the ability to say no.

Where it fits in a partner-building year

Use it in the two situations that repeat: the first quarter, when the pipeline exists on paper and not in the bank, and the gap after a partner leaves. Set it aside for the flights and the meals that keep provincial partners warm, since those are the costs people cut first and regret last.

What do you owe once referral income becomes regular?

Referral commissions are income, and the Thai administration treats them as such. Two facts settle almost every question a new partner-builder has, and both come straight from the tax authority.

The 150,000 baht line

The Revenue Department's personal income tax schedule exempts taxable income from 0 to 150,000 baht, then applies 5 % from 150,001 to 300,000 and rises by bands to 35 % above 4,000,000 baht. That threshold is the single most useful number for anyone starting out, because it tells you when this stops being pocket money in the eyes of the administration and becomes a filing obligation with a rate attached.

Two deadlines, not one

The annual return is due by 31 March of the year following the tax year, and a separate half-year return is due by 30 September for certain categories of income earned in the first half. Nearly every guide written outside Thailand mentions only March. If your commissions are not salary, check whether the September filing applies to you before you assume it does not.

Keep the record as you go

Save the transfer confirmations month by month rather than reconstructing a year in March. A referral business generates a lot of small credits from several sources, and the reconstruction is genuinely painful. The tax administration is the Revenue Department, and its published schedule and calendar are the reference for anything on this page.

Building a partner list that survives a bad quarter

The last piece is structural. A referral income that depends on one relationship is not income, it is a single point of failure with a friendly face.

Five partners beat fifty contacts

Fifty names in a phone are not a network, because you cannot maintain fifty relationships at a monthly cadence and you will end up maintaining none. Five partners you speak to reliably will produce more introductions than fifty you contact once a year, and they will also tell you when something is wrong before you lose the account.

Concentrate the sector, spread the geography

Partners in the same sector understand each other's clients, which makes the introduction land. Partners in the same province share the same downturn, which makes your income wobble together. The combination that holds up is one sector, several provinces, and the domestic flight network makes that maintainable in a country where distances are real.

Review the list once a year and be honest

Once a year, mark each partner as active, dormant or finished, and act on the answer instead of leaving dormant names on the list to make it look longer. A dormant partner gets one direct conversation about whether the relationship still works for them. A finished one gets removed, which frees the hour you were spending pretending otherwise.

Referral income in Thailand rewards patience over volume: a partner who sends steady, unspectacular business for three years is worth more than a spectacular introduction that never repeats. Agree the terms in writing, settle on the day you promised, keep the record for both filing dates, and let the list build slowly. And while it does, you can sign up free on I am Beezy and start covering the quiet months from the first week.
