Referring friends in Ghana: how a student earns a commission without wrecking a friendship in 2026

A Ghanaian student can be paid for a recommendation without losing the person who trusted them. The rules changed on 1 November 2025, and they decide what you are allowed to promote.

TL;DR

You already recommend things. You tell a coursemate which hostel has power, which trotro route is quicker at 6am, which app your aunt in London should use to send your fees. In 2026 a growing number of Ghanaian companies will pay you for that, and the payment is what turns a favour into a problem: t

You already recommend things. You tell a coursemate which hostel has power, which trotro route is quicker at 6am, which app your aunt in London should use to send your fees. In 2026 a growing number of Ghanaian companies will pay you for that, and the payment is what turns a favour into a problem: the moment money is attached, your friend is no longer taking advice, they are taking a sales pitch they did not know was a sales pitch.

The good news is that Ghana now has a written rule for the worst version of this. The Bank of Ghana's Directive for Digital Credit Services Providers came into effect on 1 November 2025, and the Bank began accepting licence applications on 3 November 2025, according to its own Digital Credit Services FAQs published in July 2026. It tells you which lenders may operate, what they must disclose, and what they may never do to the people in your phone. That is the single most useful thing a student promoter in Ghana can read before sharing a link.

Referral money is also not the only way to put cedis in your pocket between lectures. Apps such as I am Beezy pay you for content you view yourself — videos, articles, adverts — which costs nobody in your contact list anything at all.

Why does a referral in Ghana go wrong more often than the commission is worth?

The commission is not the risk, the collection call is

Think about what actually happens when a recommendation fails. Your friend downloads the loan app you posted in the hall group chat. They borrow, term is short, repayment date arrives during a semester when nobody has money. Then the lender starts calling — and in the version of this story that everyone in Ghana has heard, it does not stop at your friend's number.

The Bank of Ghana has written that behaviour out of the rulebook. Under the Directive, a provider, its officers, employees or agents must not use obscene or profane language, must not make unauthorised calls or messages to a customer's contacts, and must not publish information on public or social media without authorisation. Any improper, harassing, oppressive or abusive collection conduct is prohibited outright. Read that list again slowly, because every item on it is a way your own phone number gets dragged into somebody else's debt.

What changed on 1 November 2025

Before that date, a digital lender in Ghana operated in a grey space. Now digital credit is a designated non-bank financial service under the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Act, 2008 (Act 774), and it has a definition with edges: credit that is short-term, under twelve months, low value with a maximum loan amount of GH₵10,000, delivered through websites, mobile applications, self-service machines or any other electronic channel. Existing operators were given a transition window that closed on 30 June 2026, after which unlicensed operators must halt operations and go through the licensing regime before resuming, per the Bank of Ghana's July 2026 FAQs.

For you that translates into one sentence. If the app paying you a referral fee is still running without a licence, it is running against the Bank of Ghana, and the person you sent there has almost no route to complain.

Licensed digital lenders, and how to read the licence

You do not need a lawyer to check this one. Licensed providers are required to display their licence reference numbers on all their channels, including websites, mobile applications and other customer-facing platforms. If you open the app and cannot find a licence reference anywhere, that absence is your answer. Members of the public may also verify licensing status by writing to digitalcredit@bog.gov.gh, and the same address takes reports about entities operating without a licence.

There is a second clause worth knowing, because it concerns you directly rather than the borrower. A provider may not outsource or enter into any partnership, whether actual or incidental to the provision of digital credit services, without the prior written approval of the Bank of Ghana. An affiliate scheme is a commercial arrangement sitting next to a regulated activity. Asking a company how its promoter programme sits with that clause is a fair question, and the quality of the answer tells you a great deal about the company.

Remittance operators, where your own family is the customer

The other referral market that genuinely fits a Ghanaian student is money coming in from abroad, because you are usually the reason it is being sent. The Bank of Ghana recorded private inward transfers of 3,649.0 million US dollars over the first half of 2026, against 7,793.8 million US dollars for the whole of 2025. Operators positioned on the corridor include WorldRemit, TapTap Send, Western Union, MoneyGram, Wise, Ria, LemFi, Afriex, Mukuru and XE, alongside bank channels such as GCB Bank's money transfer service.

Here is the honesty problem, and it is where most referral content in Ghana quietly lies. The Bank of Ghana publishes that headline total without any breakdown by channel, by operator or by country of origin. Nobody can tell you which service moves the most money into Ghana, because the number does not exist in public. What you can compare is the total cost of a specific transfer, the delivery time, and the arrival point — bank account, cash pickup, or straight into a mobile money wallet. Comparing those three for one real transfer your family actually makes is worth more than any ranking you will ever be handed.

How does a referral get paid in Ghana, and what does the tax office want?

Getting paid into a wallet your contacts can reach

Mobile money is not one system in Ghana, it is several that mostly do not talk to each other in practice. In June 2026 the country ran 954 million mobile money operations worth 492.9 billion cedis, while transfers between wallets of different operators accounted for 33.5 million operations and 6.2 billion cedis. That is 3.5 per cent of the volume and 1.3 per cent of the value. The rail exists and works; almost nobody uses it.

The practical consequence for a promoter is unglamorous but real. When you tell someone to send your commission "to my MoMo", you are naming an operator, not a payment method, and if their wallet sits with a different issuer the transfer becomes a thing they have to think about. Ghana's licensed electronic money issuers are MobileMoney LTD behind MTN MoMo, Telecel Ghana Mobile Financial Services behind Telecel Cash, Airtel Mobile Commerce Ghana behind AT Money, G-Money Financial Services and Sao Payments. Ask which one the payer uses before you agree how you will be paid.

The Modified Taxation Scheme, in plain terms

Referral income is income, and the Ghana Revenue Authority has built a simplified route for exactly this kind of small, irregular earning. The Modified Taxation Scheme has three doors. The first door, Presumptive Tax based on Instalment, takes anyone whose average annual turnover has stayed under 20,000 cedis across three consecutive years, and charges a fixed sum the Authority does not publish — so ask at a GRA office rather than trusting a figure from a forum. The second, Presumptive Tax based on Turnover, runs from 20,000 up to 500,000 cedis and charges 3 per cent of what you took in. Beyond that, or in a regulated profession, you are on the Modified Cash Basis and taxed on profit after allowable costs.

BandAnnual turnoverBasis of taxPractical note
PTIUp to GH₵20,000 on average over three yearsFixed amount by activity and income levelThe amount is not published by the GRA — confirm at an office
PTTAbove GH₵20,000 and up to GH₵500,0003 per cent of annual turnoverTurnover, not profit — costs do not reduce it
MCBAbove GH₵500,000, or excluded activitiesProfit after deductible expensesLawyers, engineers and accountants sit here by default

Registration needs a Ghana Card, a Ghana Post GPS digital address and a phone number. Payment runs through the USSD code *880# or by mobile money inside the MTS Taxpayer application, and you declare your real sales for the year in the same app. None of that is heavy. Doing it early is what stops a good side income turning into an argument with the GRA the year it finally gets big.

Where the money comes from

Referral income has an uncomfortable ceiling built into it: it is capped by how many people trust you, and every use of that trust spends a little of it. Viewing-based earning has no such ceiling because there is no third party involved. I am Beezy works on a different principle. You open content — videos, articles, adverts — and the act of viewing is what earns, with the amount settling on the payment method you already use. Users who are active on it report around 5 to 15 euros a day. Taken at 13.5546 cedis to the euro, the interbank mid-rate the Bank of Ghana published for 5 August 2026, that lands somewhere between 68 and 203 cedis. The cedi moves in both directions, so check the rate before you rely on the conversion.

Why it does not spend your relationships

Set the two side by side over a semester. A referral programme pays once per person and requires you to keep finding new people, most of whom are the same people you sit next to in lectures. Viewing earnings pay for your own attention, repeat daily, and involve no conversation you would rather not have in the hall corridor. The sensible pattern for a Ghanaian student is to keep referrals for the two or three products you genuinely use and would defend, and let the daily earnings carry the volume.

What do students in Ghana ask before sharing a referral link?

Do I have to tell my friend I am paid for this?

There is no Ghanaian statute that forces a private individual to disclose an affiliate commission on a WhatsApp message. There is, however, a simple test that has never failed anyone: if you would be uncomfortable with them finding out later, tell them now. Disclosure costs a clause. Being found out costs the friendship, and in a hall or a hometown that cost compounds.

Can a lender really call my friend's contacts?

Not lawfully. Unauthorised calls or messages to a customer's contacts are among the collection practices the Directive prohibits, along with threats, violence and publishing information on social media without authorisation. If it happens anyway, that is reportable. Every provider must run a complaints mechanism and resolve complaints within twenty days, and an unresolved matter can be escalated to the Bank of Ghana.

What if the app has no licence at all?

Then do not share it, and say plainly why. The Bank of Ghana's own answer is that consumers borrowing from unlicensed lenders may face unfair lending practices, excessive charges, misuse of personal data, unlawful collection and limited routes to redress. A commission is not worth attaching your name to that.

Where to start this week

Pick one product you already pay for and would recommend even unpaid. Open it and look for the licence reference. Send one message that says what it is, what it costs, and that you receive a commission. Then watch what happens to the person on the other end — if the product serves them, the recommendation was real, and you will be able to make another one next month. That is the whole discipline, and it is why a small number of honest referrals outlasts a bulk campaign every time. Keep a second, quieter stream running underneath it by signing up free on I am Beezy, so your income never depends on how many favours your contact list still owes you.
