The groups where short jobs circulate
Local vacancy groups on social platforms carry the work that never reaches a job board: a week of stock-taking, a fortnight of data entry, a one-day event. What is a day of work worth on paper?
Ghana publishes fewer wage numbers than people assume, and the ones it does publish are easy to misread. Here is what exists, exactly as it exists.
The legal floor for 2026
The National Daily Minimum Wage is 21.77 cedis per day, in force from 1 January to 31 December 2026, agreed by the National Tripartite Committee under the Labour Act, 2003, in an agreement signed on 9 November 2025. It is 9 per cent above the 19.97 cedis of 2025. Ghana sets a daily minimum and no monthly one, so any employer quoting a monthly floor is quoting something the law does not contain. The committee recommended that the 2026 minimum be exempt from tax, but that was a recommendation and not a tax rule, so do not plan around it.
What the statistics office publishes, and what it does not
The Ghana Statistical Service publishes earnings by the hour, not by the month: a national median of 6.9 cedis an hour and a national mean of 11.4, with 8.7 in Greater Accra and 6.2 in Ashanti. Two warnings come with those figures. They date from the third quarter of 2023, and the number of hours worked is not published alongside them, so multiplying them into a monthly salary produces a figure that appears in no official document.
The 5 per cent that comes off casual pay
A casual worker is subject to a 5 per cent withholding under the rules the Ghana Revenue Authority publishes for pay as you earn, and monthly employment income begins to attract tax above the first 490 cedis under the resident schedule the authority publishes as effective since 1 January 2024. If a deduction appears on your pay, ask which of the two it is and ask for it in writing.

Getting paid, and not being cheated
Unemployment stood at 13.0 per cent nationally in the third quarter of 2025, and among young people the last published figures, from the 2021 census, put it at 32.8 per cent for the 15 to 24 age group. In that market, employers know applicants have few options, which is exactly why the terms have to be fixed before the work starts.
Fix the terms in a message before day one
Rate, number of days, payment date and the name of the person who authorises payment: four lines in a message, sent before you begin, and kept. It is not distrust, it is the difference between a disagreement and an argument with no evidence.
The wallet you give matters
Mobile money carried 954 million transactions worth 492.9 billion cedis in June 2026, but transfers between wallets on different networks remain marginal at 33.5 million operations that month. The signs of an offer that will not pay
Any request for money to be considered, a registration fee, a training fee or a deposit for equipment is the end of the conversation. Declaring irregular income
The Ghana Revenue Authority runs a Modified Taxation Scheme for exactly this kind of earner. Below 20,000 cedis of average annual turnover it applies a fixed instalment whose amount the authority does not publish, between 20,000 and 500,000 cedis it charges 3 per cent of turnover, and beyond that it taxes profit after expenses. Registration needs a Ghana Card, a Ghana Post digital address and a phone number, and payment runs by mobile money or the short code 880.
Contributing to your own pension
A self-employed person contributes 13.5 per cent of declared monthly income to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust, and an active contributor is covered by the national health scheme without paying its annual premium. Starting early costs little and buys the health cover as a side effect.
Keeping the reference
Ask every supervisor for a short written confirmation of what you did and when, at the end of the contract rather than six months later. Three of those turn a scattered set of holiday jobs into a record an employer can read.
