Every version of this promise you have read online skips the same two things: what the model actually costs when it is not free, and what the tax authority now does automatically to your sales. Both changed in Indonesia this year, and one of them changed on a specific date that most articles on this subject predate.
What follows is the working version. Which no-stock models genuinely exist here, what each one really requires instead of capital, what the four largest marketplaces have been withholding since the first of July, and how the money gets to you in a country where the payment rails are nothing like the ones described in imported guides.
Starting with no capital still means covering a first month with no revenue, and readers frequently bridge that month with I am Beezy, viewing content on the platform to generate a daily amount while the first orders build.
Which models genuinely need no stock and no capital?
Six models are commonly described as capital-free. Four of them are, with a qualification. Two of them are not, and knowing which is which saves a wasted quarter.
The models that hold up
Reselling with supplier despatch, where you list a supplier's product and they ship it, holds up: you pay nothing until an order exists. Affiliate promotion holds up, because you never own anything at all. Digital products hold up once you have made the first one, since the marginal copy costs nothing. And pre-order, where you collect orders and buy only what is sold, holds up better than any of them in this market — it is the model most small Indonesian sellers actually use, and it requires almost nothing except an honest delivery date.
The models that quietly need capital
Print-on-demand needs no stock but does need design work, which is capital in the form of unpaid hours. Jastip, buying on behalf of others while travelling or while near a particular shop, is only capital-free if the buyer pays first — as soon as you front the purchase, you are financing inventory with extra steps and taking the whole risk if the buyer disappears.
The category with a specific tax status worth knowing
Reselling phone credit and prepaid cards is a classic first business here, and it has a distinct position in the current rules. The tax administration explicitly excludes the sale of phone credit and prepaid cards from the marketplace withholding introduced on 1 July 2026, along with delivery services provided by technology platforms and sellers holding a withholding exemption. That does not make the income untaxed in general; it means this specific collection mechanism does not apply to it.
| Model | Capital genuinely required | What breaks it |
|---|---|---|
| Reselling with supplier despatch | None until an order exists | A supplier who is slow or out of stock |
| Affiliate promotion | None | Validation windows and payout thresholds |
| Digital products | The hours to make the first one | No audience to sell it to |
| Pre-order | None if buyers pay first | A delivery date you cannot hold |
| Print-on-demand | Unpaid design time | Designs nobody searches for |
| Jastip | None only if the buyer pays first | Fronting the purchase yourself |
What the marketplaces now withhold, and from whom
This is the part that dates every older article on selling online in Indonesia, and it applies whether or not you have noticed it on your statement.
The rule, as the administration states it
Since 1 July 2026, four marketplaces — Blibli, Shopee, Tokopedia and Lazada — withhold 0,5 per cent of the gross turnover of their Indonesian sellers, excluding value added tax, and remit it to the Treasury under PMK 37/2025. The administration has been unusually direct about how to read this: it is not a new tax, only a change in how the same obligation is collected. If you were already declaring, the mechanics of payment moved. If you were not, this is the point at which your activity becomes visible.
The threshold that removes it
An individual whose gross turnover does not exceed Rp500.000.000 in a tax year is not taxed on that turnover, and can be exempted from the marketplace withholding by filing a written declaration. Two things follow. The exemption is not automatic — nobody applies it on your behalf, and the declaration is your responsibility. And the threshold is measured on turnover, not on profit, which matters a great deal for a reselling model where most of the money passing through you belongs to a supplier.
Where the value added tax sits, and the mistake to avoid
The other figure everyone gets wrong on this country. Indonesian value added tax has a nominal rate of 12 per cent, but it applies to a base reduced to eleven twelfths of the value, so the effective rate is 11 per cent for almost all goods and services, with the full 12 per cent reserved for luxury goods. The administration illustrates it with a phone at Rp10.000.000: the base becomes Rp9.166.666 and the tax is Rp1.099.999. If you price your listings from an article claiming a flat 12 per cent, your margins are wrong from the first order.
What is the real cost of a no-capital business?
No capital does not mean no cost. It means the costs are paid in something other than money at the start, and then in money later, at the worst possible moment.
The three costs nobody budgets for
Time is the first, and it is the one that ends most attempts: listings, photographs, answering messages at night, and chasing a supplier who has gone quiet. Reputation is the second — a single failed delivery on a marketplace account damages something you cannot buy back. And returns are the third: in a reselling model you carry the customer relationship without controlling the despatch, so a supplier's error becomes your rating.
The supplier question, asked properly
Before listing anything, order one unit yourself, as a customer, and time it. You are measuring three things: how long despatch actually takes, what the packaging looks like when it arrives, and how the supplier responds when something is wrong. A supplier who is excellent on price and unreachable on problems will cost you more than one who is the reverse.
Choosing where to list
The honest basis for choosing a marketplace in Indonesia is not traffic, since no regulator publishes comparable figures and the ones circulating are not verifiable. It is operational: where your suppliers already are, which fee structure suits your category, and the fact that the same four platforms — Blibli, Shopee, Tokopedia and Lazada — are the ones named by the tax administration as collecting the withholding, so your exemption declaration follows the same process on each.
Getting through the first trading month with I am Beezy
A no-capital business still has a gap: the weeks between listing and the first cleared payment, during which the work is real and the income is not. That gap is where most attempts are abandoned, and it is a cash-flow problem rather than a business problem.
Why a daily rhythm fits this gap
The mechanism on I am Beezy is deliberately simple: you view content — videos, articles, advertisements — and each view generates earnings credited to your account, on a daily rhythm rather than a marketplace payment cycle. It is not a substitute for a business, and it does not scale like one. It covers the weeks in which a business that is working has not yet paid anything.
What that means in rupiah
The platform reference range is 5 to 15 euro a day. Bank Indonesia's reference rate for 5 August 2026 put the euro at Rp20.868,02, which places that range near Rp105.000 to Rp310.000 a day for that date. That rate is republished every working day, so treat the conversion as a reading taken on one day rather than a constant.
How does the money actually reach you?
The payment section of an imported guide is where Indonesian readers are most reliably misled, because the instruments described here barely resemble the ones people actually use.
Forget the card, and forget the IBAN
There is no IBAN in Indonesia and no SEPA, so any form asking for one was not built for this market. What exists domestically is BI-FAST for instant transfer and QRIS for everyday collection. As for cards: 67,9 per cent of Indonesian debit card operations in May 2026 were cash withdrawals or deposits and only 16,4 per cent were purchases. Building a checkout strategy around cards would be building it around the instrument your customers use least.
Take payment on the rail your customers already use
If you sell outside a marketplace as well as inside one, the national QR standard is what your buyer expects to see. QRIS transactions grew 100,12 per cent year on year in the second quarter of 2026, doubling in a single year, according to Bank Indonesia. It is interoperable across banks and licensed electronic money issuers by regulation, so you accept one code rather than one per application. For larger amounts, instant transfer covers it.
The border, and what does not cross it
Selling to buyers abroad is a different business, not an extension of this one. Indonesian electronic money records zero international transactions in Bank Indonesia's payment statistics, in every month published. Domestic wallets are domestic by design. Settle how a cross-border sale would actually be paid and converted before you list for buyers outside the country, not after your first foreign order arrives.

Your first thirty days
Week by week
In the first week, pick one model and one marketplace rather than four of each, and order a unit from your intended supplier as a customer. In the second, list a small number of products properly — accurate photographs, honest delivery dates, and a description that answers the question a buyer would message you about. In the third, handle whatever goes wrong, because something will, and how you handle it becomes your rating. In the fourth, look at the numbers you now have: gross turnover, what the marketplace withheld, and what is genuinely left after the supplier is paid.
The two decisions to make at day thirty
First, whether your turnover is heading anywhere near Rp500.000.000 for the year, because that single line decides whether you file an exemption declaration or plan around the withholding. Second, whether the model is producing margin or only movement — a reselling business can push a lot of money through an account while keeping almost none of it, and turnover measured on the marketplace statement flatters that badly. And if the honest answer at day thirty is that the business works but has not paid you yet, carrying the first weeks on I am Beezy is what lets you reach the month where it finally does.
