Almost everything written about separating is about the end of the process: who gets what, what a court decides, how long it takes. The part that actually hurts arrives much earlier and has nothing to do with a judge. It is the first month, when two people are running two households on the income that was covering one, and when several things that were quietly working stop working without anyone announcing it.
This article does not attempt to tell you what you are entitled to. It sets out what changes mechanically in Serbia when one household becomes two, which of those changes has a price attached that is actually published, and where the published figures stop. Where no official Serbian number exists, this article says so rather than borrowing one from a listings site.
Rebuilding an income of your own is usually the real task underneath all of it, and it does not have to start with a full-time job: I am Beezy is one of the low-commitment ways to get something arriving in an account that is yours alone, paid for the content you look at.
What stops working the day the household splits?
Three things tend to lapse quietly, and only one of them sends a warning.
Health cover that came through someone else
In Serbia, compulsory health insurance reaches a great many people through a family member rather than through their own employment. If your cover ran through a spouse's insurance, the basis for it goes when the household arrangement does. Nothing dramatic happens on the day; you find out at the pharmacy or the clinic, usually at the worst possible moment.
What it costs to put health cover back
The Republicki fond za zdravstveno osiguranje publishes the monthly contribution for joining compulsory health insurance on your own account: 5,283.60 dinars for 2026, as stated on rfzo.rs and read on 16 August 2026. That is the number to put in the first month's budget if no other basis covers you. It is a different mechanism, and a different amount, from the health contribution charged inside the quarterly regime for people paid from abroad, which is set at a minimum of 4,789 dinars per quarter and only applies if nothing else insures you.
The account, the card and the standing orders
Go through the standing orders in your banking application in the first week, because several of them are probably paying for things that are no longer shared. And be careful with transfers made to settle things informally: Serbia's instant payment system, IPS NBS, executes a transfer in about one second and handled 11,312,229 payments in July 2026. A payment pushed in error is not a card transaction you can dispute, so make the arrangement first and the transfer second.
| Route back into health cover | Published amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Joining compulsory health insurance directly | 5,283.60 RSD per month for 2026 | When no employment or other basis covers you |
| The health contribution inside the quarterly regime for foreign-paid income | Minimum 4,789 RSD per quarter | Only if you are not already insured on another basis |
| Cover through your own employment | 5.15% from you and 5.15% from the employer | From the moment an employer registers you |
How much income does one person actually need here?
The honest starting point is a set of national reference figures, because a budget built on what the household used to earn is a budget for a household that no longer exists.
Plan on the median, not the average
Serbia publishes both, and the gap between them is large. The statistical office reported a median net wage of 93,277 dinars a month for May 2026 against an average net wage of 118,398 dinars, a difference of 25,121 dinars. Half of employees earn at or below the median. Building a plan on the average overstates what a typical single income looks like by more than a quarter.
The minimum wage is hourly, which makes part-time arithmetic
Serbia sets its minimum as an hourly net amount: 371.00 dinars per hour of work, applying to all pay from 1 January 2026 under the decision published in the Official Gazette number 78/2025. There is no fixed monthly minimum, so a part-time or irregular schedule has to be worked out hour by hour rather than assumed from a monthly headline.
The tax allowance moves with your hours
Salary tax is 10 per cent, applied after a monthly allowance of 34,221 dinars for full-time work, and that allowance is proportioned down for part-time. Someone going from a shared full-time household to their own part-time job loses a share of the allowance as well as a share of the hours, which is a second reduction that budgets usually miss.
| Serbian reference figure | Amount | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Median net monthly wage | 93,277 RSD | May 2026 |
| Average net monthly wage | 118,398 RSD | May 2026 |
| Minimum wage, net, per hour worked | 371.00 RSD | From 1 January 2026 |
| Monthly salary tax allowance, full time | 34,221 RSD | In force in 2026 |
| Average pension | 56,829 RSD | June 2026 |
Two homes cost more than one, and the electricity bill shows it first
The three consumption zones
Households buying electricity from EPS under guaranteed supply are billed across three monthly consumption zones: green up to 350 kWh, blue from 351 to 1,200 kWh, and red above 1,200 kWh. Splitting one household into two does not halve the total, because the fixed part of running a home does not divide. But it does change which zone each home sits in, and that can work in your favour if the previous single household was consistently in the blue band.
Winter is when the threshold bites
The blue to red threshold came down from 1,600 to 1,200 kWh on 1 October 2025. EPS itself puts the share of households above 1,200 kWh at around 1 per cent from April to October, 3 per cent in February, March and November, and 7 per cent in December and January. If the separation happens in autumn, the first genuinely difficult bill is the one that arrives after the new year, not the one that arrives next month.
Housing, and why no rent figure appears here
You will notice that this article gives no rent. That is deliberate. The only public Serbian source of property prices and rents is the Republicki geodetski zavod, which maintains the register of real estate prices, and no usable published rent reference could be sourced for this article. Numbers taken from listing portals are asking prices from advertisers, not statistics, and budgeting a separation on them is how people commit to something they cannot sustain. Ask two or three agents in the specific neighbourhood and treat what you are told as local information rather than a national figure.
Rebuilding an income of your own with I am Beezy
The hardest part of a first month alone is often that there is no income under your own name at all, and that a job search takes longer than the bills do. I am Beezy pays for attention rather than for hours: videos, articles and advertisements you view credit your balance one view at a time, and the payout goes to the payment method you already hold. People who use it steadily report earnings equivalent to 5 to 15 euros a day. Using the official middle rate of 117.3836 dinars to the euro published by the National Bank of Serbia on 5 August 2026, somewhere between three and nine days of that covers the 5,283.60 dinars of monthly health cover discussed above. It will not replace a salary, and it is not meant to. What it does is put something into an account that is yours, on a timetable you control, while the larger arrangements are still being sorted out.
An account in one name
Whatever else is undecided, having income land somewhere that only you can see is worth arranging early. It makes the first month's budget legible, and it removes one recurring argument.
The re-entry routes, and the one that closes a door
The quarterly portal and its free zone
If work comes from a payer who does not withhold tax in Serbia, it is declared quarterly on the Poreska uprava portal at frilenseri.purs.gov.rs. Under the first of the two options, the standardised costs of 110,647 dinars per quarter are deducted before anything is charged, which means a quarter below that figure carries no income tax and no pension contribution at all. Those amounts apply from 1 February 2026 to 31 January 2027 under the Official Gazette number 6/2026. For someone restarting, that is a genuinely soft landing.
It closes the unemployment registration
A person declaring income through that regime cannot remain registered as unemployed with the Nacionalna sluzba za zaposljavanje. If that registration currently gives you something you depend on, work out what it is worth before filing a first declaration, not after.
And it builds no unemployment entitlement
The unemployment contribution is not charged under this regime and no entitlement accrues from it. Pension rights do build through the pension contribution when it is due, and health cover can be bought, but the unemployment leg of Serbian social insurance is simply not part of the arrangement. That is a fair trade for a small irregular income and a poor one if you were counting on the safety net.
What cannot be answered in an article?
Maintenance amounts
No official Serbian scale for child maintenance is published that this article could quote, and the amount is decided on the circumstances of the particular case. Anyone offering you a percentage as though it were a rule is guessing. Get advice on your own situation instead of planning around a number you read somewhere.
Property and joint debt
Two people can agree who lives where without changing who the bank considers responsible for a loan. Write to your bank and ask, in writing, who is recorded as the debtor on each product and what would be required to change it. The answer is specific to your contract, and getting it in writing early is cheaper than discovering it during a missed payment.
One local relief, if you are in Belgrade
Public transport in Belgrade has been free for all passengers on regular lines in the integrated tariff system since 1 January 2025, under a City of Belgrade decision taken at the end of December 2024. For a single-income household with school-age children in the capital, that removes a line from the monthly budget entirely. It is a Belgrade decision and it does not extend to Novi Sad, Nis or Kragujevac, where each city sets its own arrangements.
The first four weeks, in order
What to do, and when
Check whether your health cover ran through someone else, and if it did, budget 5,283.60 dinars a month for replacing it until another basis exists. Open the standing orders list and stop paying for things that are no longer shared. Rebuild the monthly plan on the median wage rather than the household's old total, and remember that a part-time job costs you part of the tax allowance as well as part of the hours. Expect the electricity bill to become the difficult one in December and January rather than immediately. Do not commit to housing on the strength of a listings site. And if you need income in your own name before a job appears, I am Beezy lets you start this week rather than next quarter.
